The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team has won three World Cups and four Olympic gold medals, set record TV ratings, drawn massive crowds, earned huge revenues for FIFA and U.S. Soccer, and helped to redefine the place of women in sports. But despite their dominance, and their rosters of superstar players, they’ve endured striking inequality low pay, poor playing conditions, and limited opportunities to play in professional leagues.

The National Team, from leading soccer journalist Caitlin Murray, tells the history of the USWNT in full, from their formation in the 1980s to the run-up to the 2019 World Cup, chronicling both their athletic triumphs and less visible challenges off the pitch. Murray also recounts the rise and fall of U.S. professional leagues, including the burgeoning National Women’s Soccer League, an essential part of the women’s game.

Through nearly 100 exclusive interviews with players, coaches, and team officials, including Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Heather O’Reilly, Julie Foudy, Brandi Chastain, Pia Sundhage, Tom Sermanni, and Sunil Gulati, Murray takes readers inside the locker rooms and board rooms in engrossing detail. A story of endurance and determination, The National Team is a complete portrait of this beloved and important team.

"I just finished this book and found it really interesting and fun to read, while being informative at the same time. I became a fan of the USWNT in 2016 and, while I have picked up on some of the history since then, this book really lays out how the team came to be and the struggles and successes they faced along the way. In particular, I loved a lot of the interviews with former/current players, coaches and staff as it really added beneficial insights and color commentary to the facts. Highly recommend to anyone interested in soccer/women/history!"

The National Team The Inside Story of the Women Who Changed Soccer Caitlin Murray 9781419734496 Books Reviews

  • The National Team is impressive in its breadth and depth. The interviews, the stories, the sourcing, the photographs, and the mosaic of perspectives make this essential reading. This is simply outstanding sports writing. I almost cried reading the first story in the book about the USWNT arriving at the first game of the '99 World Cup. I won't spoil it for you, but wow.

More than that, though, The National Team is an important book. My daughter has not stopped reading it since it arrived. She takes it everywhere. She may not ever finish because she is stopping on every page to read aloud or summarize a story for us. Representation matters, and here is a story--no, a saga--spanning more than 30 years of women daring to carve out and ultimately demand their rightful place in their sport.

Highly recommended for everyone who cares at all about soccer.

  • As a young fan who really fell in love with the USWNT during the 2015 World Cup, I never knew the history behind the team and all they had to fight for over the years. Murray provides wonderful insight from her interviews with the people in the room and deftly covers the action both on and off the field. A must read for any sports fan.
  • Caitlin Murray uncovered the 30+ yrs of the struggles of the US Women's National Soccer Team who faced a federation that did not support nor believe in them. AND YET, the USWNT is the MOST successful women's soccer team in the world. An incredible amount of research, interviews, etc., tells this story like no other news report or book has to date. It's intriguing and yet revealing what women/minorities have done to empower themselves against all odds. A must read for anyone interested in sports, equality, and the fight for it. #UntilWeAllWin
  • A wonderful and in depth history of the Women’s National Team, something no one else has done at this length before. the book does an amazing job taking you behind the scenes and explaining how what happened off the field effected the performances on it. I have a newfound respect for the players of the US and NWSL even though I always considered myself a supporter of the women’s game. Learning what the players did behind the scenes was remarkable. The way the author writes about the action on the field made me feel like I was reliving the Olympics and World Cups all over again and it gave me goosebumps. I am even more psyched for the 2019 World Cup than I could have imagined. This is a MUST Read for every soccer fan both male and female.
  • Loved every word. It’s a must read for passionate soccer fans (men or women) and an amazing read for casual or even non-fans. It’s a well written book about over coming obstacles, perseverance, how the much things have changed and how much they still need to.

I’ve been an avid fan of the USWNT since ‘99 and I learned a great deal from this book. Fantastic read.
  • Everyone needs to read this book. I finished it in 2 days because I couldn’t put it down. If you like reading and you like the uswnt past and present then give this a chance. Read about what these women did and are continuing to do to fight for equal rights. Wish I had more of it
  • Far too much about money and soccer politics and not nearly enough about the players as people.
